The Eastern Waterfront of Mumbai spans a length of about 30 km from Colaba in the south to Thane in the north. Within the island city, the waterfront area not only harbours the port activities of handling passenger and goods traffic, but various defence uses, along with small and largescale industries. ‘Kaula Bandar’ is located on the eastern water front of the Mumbai. ‘Kaula Bandar is a subpart of Mazgaon Reclamation Estate (Darukhana). This area were built in the nineteenth century(1908) for maritime trade in wood and coal from neighboring states but have lost their relevance in the present economy. Ship breaking activity, which is environmentally hazardous, is also conducted in this estate. MbPT (Mumbai Port Trust) is land owner of Kaula Bandar. MbPT has given some part of the land to private parties on long lease.
